Who we are
After graduating from Kingston university with a degree in product & furniture design, I’ve worked with different companies around the world gathering skills & knowledge along the way. One of these jobs involved steam bending, it was there that I discovered my passion for the dark art.
Jig is the first step for me forging my own path in the world of design. I craft every piece by hand, meaning that each one is almost identical but at the same time unique in its own right.
CRAFTSMANSHIP
In a world that seems to be moving ever faster, and with that, further from human made products. These pieces represent the importance of craftsmanship & celebrating these traditional techniques that were once a big part of our culture.
When you allow the time, you can create real long lasting quality & an attention to detail that’s only achievable by skilled hands. My aim is to create functional objects that hold beauty even when not fulfilling their intended use, Sculptural pieces with a purpose.
Steam bending is what helps to guide the creation of these pieces, taking this ancient skill & combining it with a contemporary design style – Pushing solid wood beyond its perceived limits.
INNOVATION
I push the limits here in the workshop in order to discover where the boundaries lie with this technique. First on paper, then with wood, a lot of trial & error and some steep learning curves which are all a necessary part of the journey.
Design through making has always been my preferred approach. Everyday I’m learning more about the process & the materials which will inevitably lead to new & innovative ideas. Essential for staying ahead of the curve.
I’m currently developing more products, one of which - ‘The Double Higgins’ is shown in the short clip below.
SUSTAINABILITY
Great design is about more than just the finished product. We have a responsibility as designers to seek the path with the smallest ecological footprint. Sourcing materials as locally & as sustainably as possible.
The green Oak & Ash that I use is from a local farm which is based just five miles away from my workshop. The majority of these trees have been cleared from nearby private land due to storm damage or die back culling. Consciously crafting lasting products whilst protecting the natural world that inspires us.
